Rome’s family lived in Florida until they were chased away by the unusually strong hurricane season of 2004. A record five storms made landfall in the state during late summer and fall, damaging the business owned by Rome’s father, Wade. They relocated to Missouri, where Wade works as a mixed martial-arts trainer.

Rome says

“Yeah,” when asked if he’s planning to play right away. “I’m not here to be a cheerleader.”

About Rome

He turned down Florida, among others, to accept an early Oklahoma State offer. Rome switched to the Huskers immediately after their October victory at Missouri, a game played in heavy rain — apparently, Rome’s kind of weather. He attended the game and fashions himself as a blue-collar lineman. Rome collected 74 tackles and seven sacks as a senior.

Our take

Highly motivated and likely to bring the intensity and attitude for which the NU coaches search. Rome started college last month and gets a leg up on his class in spring practice. He wants to play next season, and it may happen, though he must outplay more experienced players in August. In time, Rome likely will grow into an interior lineman.
