Garret Johns, a 6-foot-3, 270-pound center from Aurora, Neb., said the atmosphere around the team was one of the major reasons he made his decision to walk on at NU.
“When I went there and watched them work out, I could tell the team jelled,” said the four-year starter for Aurora and two-time All-Heartland Super Squad selection. “You couldn’t tell who were walk-ons and who were recruits. I could tell there was a great camaraderie.”
Johns said talking with former Aurora players who’ve walked on at Nebraska – Tyson Broekemeier and Josh Bart – along with the success of walk-ons on the offensive line made him comfortable with his decision.
“You see guys ahead of you like (Mike) Caputo do it as a walk-on,” Johns said. “He’s a two-year starter. Spencer Long was a walk-on. It doesn’t matter. If you work hard, the coaches want to put the right players on the field.”
Johns, who had a scholarship offer from Northwest Missouri State, said the Nebraska coaches plan to keep him at center and want him to work on long snapping.
