Butler was born in Wellsboro (Tioga County), Pennsylvania on March 19, 1847. He enlisted and was mustered in the regiment on February 25, 1864. Based on his date of birth, Butler was 16 years old at the time of his enlistment. He served about 18 months before being discharged on August 3, 1865 at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
The 187th Pennsylvania Infantry was organized at Philadelphia from March 3 to May 4, 1864. The unit participated in the Siege of Petersburg from June 16 through September 22, 1864. The regiment suffered heavy casualties on June 18, 1864 during the Siege. On that date, 20 members were killed and 47 were wounded. In May, 1865 the unit was assigned to guard duty over the remains of President Lincoln and provide escort services to the funeral cortege.
Butler died on February 1, 1931 at the age of 83 years. He is buried in the Ewing Cemetery in Ewing (Holt County), Nebraska. Butler was a member of the Augur Post (#192) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Ewing.
