Evans was born in Holmes County, Ohio on November 24, 1845. He was residing in Lake County, Indiana when he enlisted and was mustered in the regiment on December 15, 1863. He served nearly 2 years before being discharged on November 10, 1865 at Indianapolis.
The 12th Indiana Cavalry was organized at Kendallville and Michigan City, Indiana between December 10, 1863 and April 28, 1864. The regiment spent most of the balance of the Civil War in Alabama. It was part of the Siege of Spanish Fort and Fort Blakely between March 26 and April 9, 1865.
Evans die don December 5, 1932 at the age of 87 years. He is buried in the Harvard Cemetery in Harvard (Clay County), Nebraska. Evans was a member of the Richardson Post (#60) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Harvard.
