Kinnison was born in Warren County, Indiana on October 27, 1844. Kinnison’s obituary indicates that he enlisted in the regiment on August 25, 1863 and served until November 18, 1865. Kinnison enlisted at Central City, Colorado. He was discharged at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. The Sons of the Union Veterans indicate that he enlisted on December 10, 1862 and served until August 1, 1865,
The 1st Colorado Cavalry was organized in November 1, 1862. It was assigned operations against the Indians and protecting stage routes. Detachments of the regiment were assigned to various locations throughout the Colorado Territory.
Kinnison died on March 14, 1932 at the age of 87 years. He is buried in the Nelson Cemetery in Nelson (Nuckolls County), Nebraska. Kinnison was a member of the Thomas Post (#15) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Nelson.
