Veteran Reserve Corps (VRC)
McIntyre was born in Illinois on November 11, 1846. He was residing in Wyoming (Lee County), Illinois when he enlisted in the regiment on August 14, 1862. McIntyre was mustered on September 2, 1862. He served about 1 year before being transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps (VRC) on September 1, 1863. Illinois records do not indicate how long he served with the VRC or the reason for the transfer.
The VRC was established for soldiers that had been wounded, injured, or were suffering from illness. The members were assigned to light duty which freed up able-bodied soldiers for front-line duty.
McIntyre died on January 7, 1931 at the age of 84 years. He is buried in the Wyuka Cemetery in Lincoln (Lancaster County), Nebraska. McIntyre was a member of the Farragut Post (#25) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Lincoln.
