March was born in Iowa on February 6, 1843. He was residing in Bloomfield (Davis County), Iowa when he enlisted in the regiment on May 11, 1863. March was mustered on June 3, 1863 and re-enlisted on February 1, 1864. He served 2 years and 2 months before he was discharged on August 9, 1865 at Atlanta, Georgia.
The 3rd Iowa Cavalry was organized at Keokuk between August 30 and September 14, 1861. During March’s enlistment, the regiment was involved in operations along the Kansas and Missouri border. They fought at the Battle of Westport (October 23, 1864) in the Kansas City area. The unit was sent to Georgia and was mustered out at Atlanta on August 9, 1865.
March died on October 25, 1930 at the age of 87 years. He is buried in the Rock Creek Cemetery in Wahoo (Saunders County), Nebraska. March was a member of 2 Grand Army of the Republic posts:
Farragut Post (#25) in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Baird Post (#64) in Valparaiso, Nebraska.
