Private Michael Mitchell
10th Independent Battery, Ohio Light Artillery
Mitchell was born in Ireland on August 17, 1845. He enlisted and mustered in the regiment on January 5, 1864. Mitchell served about 18 months. He was discharged on June 28, 1865 at Camp Chase, Ohio.
He joined the unit in early 1864. During his enlistment, the battery was part of the Atlanta (GA) Campaign (June 9-September 8, 1864) and participated in the Assault on Kenesaw (June 27, 1864). Ohio records indicate that Mitchell was captured by Confederate forces on August 17, 1864 near Marietta, Georgia. The length of his imprisonment and release date was not available.
Mitchell died on December 24, 1932 at the age of 87 years. He is buried in the Arapahoe Cemetery in Arapahoe (Furnas County), Nebraska. Mitchell was a member of the Garrett Post (#120) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Arapahoe.
