Overman was born on May 22, 1848. He enlisted in the regiment on August 15, 1864 at St Joseph, Missouri. Overman was mustered on September 24, 1864 and served about 9 months. He was discharged on June 29, 1865 at Benton Barracks, Missouri.
The 48th Missouri Infantry was organized at St Louis, Jefferson City, and Rolla, Missouri between August 3 and November 22, 1864. The regiment was assigned to various duties:
Defense of Rolla, Missouri against General Sterling Price (until December 1864).
Moved to Columbia, Tennessee and performed duties on the Tennessee & Alabama Railroad (until February 1865).
Moved to Chicago and escorted Confederate prisoners to City Point, Virginia (until June 1865).
Overman died on October 20, 1930 at the age of 82 years. He is buried in the Stella Cemetery in Stella (Richardson County), Nebraska.
