Richards was born in Charleston (Orleans County), Vermont on November 26, 1847. He was residing in Barton (Orleans County) when he enlisted in the 15th Vermont on September 3, 1862. He was mustered on October 22, 1862 and served a little over 9 months before his discharge on August 5, 1863. Richards was 14 years old at the time of his enlistment. He served as an orderly for the commanding officer of the regiment.
He re-entered the Union Army on September 22, 1864 as a member of the 17th Vermont Infantry. He served about 8 months before his discharge on June 2, 1865. His unit was part of the Siege of Petersburg (VA) at the conclusion of the War.
Richards died on August 19, 1931 at the age of 84 years. He is buried in the Ridge Cemetery in Fremont (Dodge County), Nebraska. Richards was a charter member of the McPherson Post (#4) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Fremont.
