Smith was born in Wayne County, Ohio on June 9, 1844. He was residing in Decatur (Adams County), Indiana when he enlisted and mustered in the regiment on August 28, 1862. Smith served about 33 months before his discharge on May 18, 1865.
The 89th Indiana Infantry was organized and mustered at Indianapolis on August 28, 1862. During his enlistment, the regiment was involved in several campaigns and battles. Some of them include:
Red River Campaign (LA) (March 10-May 22, 1864).
Battle of Pleasant Hill (LA) (April 9, 1864).
Battle of Nashville (TN) (December 15-16, 1864).
Assault and capture of Fort Blakely (AL) (April 9, 1865).
Smith died on March 5, 1930 at the age of 85 years. He is buried in the Smith Cemetery in Nelson (Nuckolls County), Nebraska. Smith was a member of the Thomas Post (#15) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Nelson.
