Private Albert Tharp

Tharp was born in Marion County, Ohio on April 22, 1843. He was residing in Leon (Decatur County), Iowa when he enlisted in the regiment on August 15, 1862. Tharp was mustered on October 15, 1862 and served 3 years. He was discharged on August 15, 1865 at Houston, Texas.
The 34th Iowa Infantry was organized and mustered at Burlington on October 15, 1862. During his enlistment, the unit was involved in several battles and operations. Some of them include:
Battle of Arkansas Post (AK) (June 10-11, 1863).
Siege of Vicksburg (MS) (June 10-July 4, 1863).
Capture of Fort Morgan (AL) (August 23, 1864).
Siege of Fort Blakely (AL) (April 2-9, 1865).
Tharp died on June 20, 1930 at the age of 87 years. He is buried in the Grand Island Cemetery in Grand Island (Hall County), Nebraska. Tharp was a member of the Lyon Post (#11) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Grand Island.
