Whitlow was born in Cass County, Illinois on April 22, 1846. He enlisted in the regiment on November 15, 1862 and was mustered on December 8, 1862. Whitlow served a little over 1 year and was discharged on December 23, 1863.
The 2nd Nebraska Cavalry was organized at Omaha on October 23, 1862. The regiment was assigned to protecting emigrants, stage and telegraph lines, and operating against Indians. In addition, it was part of General Sully’s expedition against Indians in the Dakota Territory (August 13-September 11, 1863).
Whitlow was a substitute for his father (Peter). He died on April 22, 1931 at the age of 84 years. Whitlow is buried in the Sheridan Cemetery in Auburn (Nemaha County), Nebraska.
