Wilson was born in Morgan County, Ohio on June 8, 1847. He was residing in Eldora (Hardin County), Iowa when he enlisted and mustered in the regiment on November 2, 1863. Wilson was 16 years old at the time of his enlistment and served about 2 years and 3 months. He was discharged on February 3, 1866 at Little Rock, Arkansas.
The 9th Iowa Cavalry was organized at Davenport, Iowa on November 30, 1863. It was assigned to Arkansas for the major portion of the War and was assigned guard duty of railroads and bridges.
Wilson died March 11, 1930 at the age of 82 years. He is buried in the Wyuka Cemetery in Lincoln (Lancaster County), Nebraska. Wilson was a member of the following Nebraska Posts of the Grand Army of the Republic:
Morton Post (#17) in Hebron, Nebraska.
Farragut Post (#25) in Lincoln, Nebraska.
