Private Hiram Shufeldt
Company B, 17th Illinois Cavalry
Shufeldt was born in New York State on March 10, 1849. There is some question regarding Shufeldt’s date of birth. Illinois enlistment records indicate that he was 18 years old when he enlisted in November, 1864. If the given date of birth is correct, he would have been 15 years old at the time of enlistment. He enlisted on November 29, 1864 and was mustered on December 1, 1864. Shufeldt served about 1 year with the regiment. He was mustered out on December 15, 1865 at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.
Private Shufeldt joined the regiment in the final stages of the Civil War. During his enlistment the unit was assigned to duties in Missouri near Pilot Knob and Cape Girardeau. In June 1865 the regiment was sent to Kansas for about 6 months before it was mustered out.
He died on August 21, 1938 at the probable age of 89 years. He is buried in the Andrew Cemetery in Friend (Saline County), Nebraska. At the time of his death, he was the last member of the Sherman Post (#130) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Friend.
