Watson was born in Pennsylvania on January 20, 1842. He enlisted in the regiment at Downieville, California on November 9, 1864. Watson was mustered in the unit on November 21, 1864. He served about 17 months and was mustered out of the regiment on April 26, 1866 at the Presidio in San Francisco.
The 7th California Infantry was organized in December 1864. Company K (along with 2 others) was sent to Camp Drum in Southern California. The regiment was sent to Arizona and stationed there until June 1866.
Watson died on March 27, 1917 at the age of 75 years. He is buried in the Fairview Cemetery in Cambridge (Furnas County), Nebraska. He was a charter member and the last member of the Mulligan Post (#128) of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) in Sacramento, Nebraska. In addition, he was a charter member of the Glover Post (#111) of the GAR in Holdrege, Nebraska.
