Leonard was born in Ireland in September, 1839. He was living in Lincoln (Logan County), Illinois when he enlisted in the regiment on September 19, 1861. He was mustered on September 26, 1861 and served a little over 3 years. He was mustered out November 3, 1864 at Springfield, Illinois.
The 4th Illinois Cavalry was organized and mustered at Ottawa, Illinois on September 26, 1861. Most of the companies were detached from each other and operated as separate entities. The various companies were assigned to duties in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee during the War.
Leonard died on December 22, 1916. He is buried in the Riverton Cemetery in Riverton (Franklin County), Nebraska. He was one of the last members of the Blair Post (#150) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Riverton.
