Sharp was born in Wisconsin on April 7, 1837. He was residing in Osborne (Outagamie County), Wisconsin when he enlisted and was mustered in the regiment on February 8, 1865. He served about 9 months and was mustered out on November 1, 1865.
The 49th Wisconsin Infantry was organized at Madison between December 24, 1864 and March 5, 1865. The unit was assigned to garrison and guard duty in Missouri until it was mustered out on November 8, 1865.
Sharp died on January 16, 1931 at the age of 93 years. He is buried in the West Cedar Valley Cemetery in Elgin (Antelope County), Nebraska. He was a charter and one of the last members of the Hayes Post (#327) of the Grand Army of the Republic in Elgin.
