Corporal William Burgess
Company G, 42nd Wisconsin Infantry
Burgess was born in Racine County, Wisconsin on March 14, 1846. He was living in Dover (Racine County), Wisconsin when he enlisted and was mustered on March 17, 1864. Burgess served 20 months with the regiment. He was mustered out November 15, 1865 at Austin, Texas. The unit served in several southern states during the Civil War.
Burgess died on September 17, 1940 at the age of 94 years. He is buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery in DeWitt (Saline County), Nebraska. At the time of his death, he was the last member of the Curtis Post (#89) of the Grand Army of the Republic in DeWitt.
