Nearly 1.9 million people have attended Nebraska spring games since the event's creation in 1950. Though it's nothing more than an intrasquad scrimmage, the annual Red-White game has become a must-attend event. We dug through the numbers to find the trends and factors that have made the Husker spring game one of the nation's most popular.
In an April 5 ruling, a judge stripped quadruple-murder defendant Anthony Garcia of his lead defense attorney. Douglas County District Judge Gary Randall ruled that Alison Motta no longer could represent Garcia because of her misconduct. She can participate in court as any nonlawyer could but cannot have a speaking role, Randall ruled. The judge's decision leaves Motta's husband, Robert Motta Jr., and father-in-law, Robert Motta Sr., to represent Garcia at trial.

Berkshire Hathaway Inc.’s “rock-solid foundation” will keep the company going strong over the next 50 years, Warren Buffett said, adding that its major businesses will be vital to the American economy “a century hence.” But he projected only above-average financial results, saying the big percentage gains in his investment company’s earlier years are no longer possible. “The numbers have become too big.”

A document obtained by The World-Herald indicates Nebraska is on the hook for $6.54 million over the next four years to buy out the contract of former Husker head football coach Bo Pelini. The majority of the payments will be made in monthly installments of $128,009. Check out the agreement between the University of Nebraska and Pelini below for more details on the four-year payment plan.
It doesn’t happen often — just four times in the past 50 years — but occasionally a school from outside metropolitan Omaha or Lincoln claims the Class A state championship. It could happen this year, as Norfolk (25-0) has its sights on three more wins this weekend. Interestingly, Norfolk’s 1987 team is one of the most recent teams from outside the big cities to pull off the feat.

Nebraska is perfect through five games for just the third time in the past 13 seasons. What happens when NU starts 5-0 (or better)? History tells us that NU has finished with as many as four losses just twice in the previous 18 seasons it’s been unbeaten through five. Most of the time — 13 times to be exact — it ends the season ranked in the AP top 10.

Omaha police announced Monday that they had arrested Anthony J. Garcia III in the May deaths of Dr. Roger Brumback of the Creighton University Medical Center staff and his wife, Mary, along with the 2008 killings of 11-year-old Thomas Hunter and his family's house cleaner, Shirlee Sherman. Garcia was terminated from Creighton's residency program, and appears to have blamed Brumback and Hunter's father, William Hunter, for his subsequent problems. The next superintendent of the Omaha Public Schools will be paid a base salary of $265,000 annually in a three-year contract approved Jan 23, 2013 by the school board. Mark Evans, who will start July 1, also will receive a $12,000 annual transportation allowance and up to $15,000 in moving expenses. Evans will receive an annuity, funded by the school district at a rate of 14 percent of his annual pay. He also could make $3,750 by consulting with OPS officials before he officially takes over.

The evidence is crystal clear. Bo Pelini has coached 68 games at Nebraska. When NU’s turnover margin is positive or even, the Huskers are 35-2. When they lose the turnover battle, they’re 13-18. Against ranked teams, the contrast is even more stark: 8-1 when NU wins or ties in turnovers, 0-11 when it loses. Why hasn’t Nebraska joined the nation’s elite? More than anything, it’s turnovers. Too many giveaways, not enough takeaways. Look at the 25 winningest programs since 2008. NU is last in turnover margin — by far. In 2012, the problem got worse. Blame falls mostly on the offense. Nebraska’s 35 giveaways were second-to-last nationally — 20 more than Alabama, Notre Dame and Florida; 23 more than Kansas State. The last time any other college football team won nine games — let alone 10 — with a turnover margin as bad as 2012 Nebraska’s? Hawaii in 2002. NU is trying to win a race with its shoes untied. But there is hope. Notre Dame was second-to-last in turnover margin in 2011. The Irish cleaned it up and — voila! — a 12-0 regular season. Nebraska can do it, too. But first take a hard look at the past.

The Jan. 23, 2013 resignation of Freddie Gray from the Omaha school board elevated Marian Fey to the board's presidency. Gray submitted a three-page resignation letter, two pages of which listed her accomplishments. Her departure capped a stormy year marked by two superintendent searches, and a failed vote last summer to remove Gray as president over her handling of the Nancy Sebring email controversy.

A labor arbitrator has reinstated two Omaha police officers, Jackie Dolinsky and Aaron Pennington, who were fired in 2011 after a controversial arrest, a decision that largely concludes months of legal battles over the incident. Sharon K. Imes, a Wisconsin-based arbitrator, said city attorneys did not submit persuasive evidence that Officer Aaron Pennington used excessive force during a forceful May 29, 2011, arrest outside Creighton University Medical Center.
A report by two researchers at the University of Nebraska at Omaha that assesses the city's street gangs and the efforts to fight them. Several current and former law enforcement officials, Mayor Jim Suttle's office and leaders of north Omaha's Empowerment Network condemn many of the report's conclusions. The decidedly modern — fluorescent shoes, anyone? — blended with the antiquated — yes, that’s a tile floor — when the 2012 All-Nebraska basketball players met in the lane at Holy Name Fieldhouse in north-central Omaha. At the time of its opening in 1950, the 2,000-seat gym that cost $200,000 to build was the largest at any high school in town. Holy Name’s Ramblers, who beat Sioux City Heelan in the gym’s first game, used the rounded steel-rafter facility until the high school closed in 1989. Fans flocked to the Bluejays early this season, when it seemed like every hoops expert in the land fell hard for the blue and white. A 10-1 start put a target on Creighton and created a situation ripe for a letdown. A big one never really came, though a three-game February losing streak sent the national experts looking for another “it” team. Through it all, good team chemistry and a pair of home wins in front of their charged-up fans helped the Jays get back on track. Nebraska defensive coordinator Carl Pelini is the new head coach at Florida Atlantic. The FAU Board of Trustees approved a five-year, $2.49-million deal for Pelini, who will start with a base salary of $450,000 with a 5 percent increase each January through 2016.

Sarpy County Attorney Lee Polikov said he believes a judge will order a Bellevue school administrator to hand over financial records of a nonprofit organization formerly run out of the school district's offices. Polikov asked the judge to compel Kyle Fairbairn to comply with a two-month-old subpoena seeking the records of the Military Impacted Schools Association. The organization is run by former Bellevue Superintendent John Deegan. Polikov issued the subpoena after Fairbairn failed to comply with numerous requests for MISA financial records by the State Patrol and State Auditor Mike Foley. The patrol and the auditor are investigating MISA as part of a wider probe that relates to Deegan and other Bellevue school officials who worked in his administration.
Read the report accusing eleven staff members at the Beatrice State Developmental Center of abusing disabled residents or failing to report abuse. The internal investigation by the center found that direct care staff hit, pushed or choked seven residents.

The Omaha Firefighters Union filed a "prohibited practice" complaint against the City of Omaha and several councilmembers. The move follows the Council meeting Tuesday where a proposed contract with the union was amended, but ultimately not passed.
A letter from Omaha mayor Jim Suttle to the city Council urged the council to reconsider proposed amendments to the contract with the city's fire union. The mayor also said he would veto a contract including any changes.
The administration of Mayor Jim Suttle introduced its proposed budget before the city Council on July 19. The council is scheduled to vote on the budget at its meeting on August 23.
One of the Legislature's main goals in the 2011 session was to overhaul the Commission of Industrial Relations, the board that settles disputes between governments and public labor unions. LB397 achieved that overhaul.
